Industrial boilers can last many years if they are given due attention. A generator in good condition is synonymous with continuity of production and high performance. For this reason, to maintain its optimal state, it is necessary to follow a few but good rules.<\/strong><\/p>\n

With the modern steam generators, whose economic behaviour does not allow significant discharge (the heat lost with the drains increases with the operating temperature) and whose mechanical cleaning is difficult (as they are generally firetube boilers), it is always necessary to proceed to a partial or total elimination of certain constituents of the supply water, and, at the same time, to maintain the composition of the water in the boiler under favourable conditions.
\nIn the absence of these conditions there are some drawbacks that may affect the operation of steam plant due to the formation of solid deposits (sludge and encrustations), the dragging of various substances in the steam or the corrosion.
\nThe presence of sludge hinders the transmission of heat, slows down the circulation of water in the affected areas and causes tumultuous boiling and foaming in the generator. Encrustations on heated surfaces, on the other hand, cause serious issues such as the lowering of the boiler’s thermal efficiency (and therefore an increase in fuel consumption), the deterioration of the generator’s construction material due to overheating of the surfaces, the insufficient circulation of fluids (as a consequence of blockages and bottlenecks) and, last but not least, a higher maintenance cost for the more frequent cleaning work and for the replacement of deteriorated parts.
\nWhat causes the formation of these is calcium carbonate, which precipitates rapidly when the temperature inside the boiler is above 100 \u00b0 C in the presence of carbonated water. In contrast, in a low-pressure boiler, calcareous encrustation is tolerable, provided it is of the compact type and maintained within reasonable thicknesses, and is sometimes considered useful, as it protects the walls from corrosion.
\nThe dragging of substances entails, in addition to the lowering of the vapor content, also its pollution, as the solid substances may settle along the steam circuit. Dragging may depend on incorrect design of the generator, improper operating conditions, or the presence in the water of substances that facilitate foaming. In some cases, a thick foamy layer is formed on the water to the point that it affects and pollute the steam. Therefore, the periodic cleaning of the boilers prevents the detachment of oxides or other solid substances from the walls during operation and, with discharges, it can monitor the levels of the dissolved and suspended substances.
\nIn addition, condensates that come from steam containing carbon dioxide are acidic and aggressive and cause corrosion of the condensers. The most obvious measure to combat corrosion along the condense path is, therefore, to minimize the amount of CO2 and oxygen in the steam. To avoid the entry of oxygen into the cycle, besides using perfectly degassed water, it is necessary to check the tightness of the joints, the valves and the condensate tanks. The amount of CO2 in the vapor can be reduced by avoiding the use of sodium carbonate in the conditioning of water and by excluding the bicarbonate ion from the integration water. Alternatively, ammonia or volatile amines can be injected in the ammonia cycle, as they neutralize CO2. Furthermore, the use of low vapor pressure inhibitors, which are strongly adsorbed on the metal surfaces, will guarantee a protective action (“filming amines”).
\nWhen a boiler is left to stand, for example during work stops, the oxygen contained in the water, unable to move away from the steam, will start to corrode the boiler and its pipes. To prevent this phenomenon, it will then be necessary to use reducing substances, such as sodium sulphate, and to maintain a modest overpressure in the atmosphere of nitrogen in the generator. If a long period of inactivity is foreseen, it is advisable to empty the boiler while hot, dry it with hot air, introduce a dehydrating agent, such as lime, to eliminate even the last traces of humidity, and close all the sources of contact with the exterior.
\nIn conclusion, for the proper functioning of a boiler, it is not enough to purify the feedwater, but it is also necessary to intervene periodically during the operation of the generator, by correcting the characteristics of the water, that are continuously variable due to evaporation. Both operations, the preventive purification and the water good maintenance, must be as accurate as the operating conditions are more demanding.<\/p>\n
