This causes the death of over 300 thousand children under the age of 5 each year. For this reason, the United Nations have established the World Water Day, celebrated every year on March 22nd, to raise awareness about the responsible use of water resources and the scarcity of drinking water. This recurrence has been celebrated annually since 1993, in correlation with themed events and activities aimed at promoting good practices and raising funds to be allocated to this vital cause.<\/p>\n<p>Water should be accessible to every individual in the world, in sufficient quantity and quality, as established in 2010 by the UN. In everyday life, water is seen as a resource, a source of life, a threat or a necessity; nothing can replace it. There is no substitute for water: we cannot even drink a drop of coffee or tea without water. Water is revered, is used as a weapon, is cursed when there is too much or when there is too little.<\/p>\n<p>How much water do we have and how much do we use?<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Blue Planet&#8221; is our home; it is covered with oceans that stretch for thousands of square kilometers: about 70% of the surface of the globe is covered with salt water,<\/p>\n<p>It is the rain that brings us the fresh water, vital for our daily survival: the raindrops nourish the soil, descend into the underground aquifers and fill the rivers and lakes before pouring into the oceans. The water that can be seen flowing in the rivers and lakes is only 0.3% of the fresh water present on earth; groundwater resources are much more extensive, about 1\/3 of the planet&#8217;s fresh water. But about 70% of this fresh water is solid in the mountainous regions. We are not able to see the subterranean currents, evaporation or transpiration of water in the atmosphere. It is the sun that guides the hydrological cycle of water: rain, snow and ice, currents, humidity and steam.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh water is a renewable resource, but it is not distributed fairly, so that the demand for water is constantly increasing. It is hard to think of reducing poverty without using more water for homes, for agriculture, for industry. About 1.4 billion people &#8211; or 15% of the world&#8217;s population &#8211; live in &#8220;closed&#8221; river basins, where water can no longer be taken from rivers or pumped out of the ground. Water emergency &#8211; in terms of water scarcity and deterioration of quality-is in the top list of the global political agenda and causes the concern of the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>The tendency to take water for granted, the scarcity and the increasing degradation of water resources impose that the value of water is recognized and that it is used with caution. Caution not only in the use of water flowing in our sinks or in our bathtubs, but also against the abuse of water and in the misuse of those goods whose production requires huge volumes of water.<\/p>\n<p>It is therefore essential to adjust ourselves according to the limits set by nature, not to find ourselves one day in an unrecoverable situation which, however catastrophic, does not seem so far away.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This day is an opportunity to dwell on such a vital element for our daily life, especially in a historical moment where climate changes and lack of water are hot topics.
