The project
Technoacque played a key role as a strategic partner in securing the OX-ICE® patent for the production of packaged food-grade ice containing a precisely defined concentration range of hydrogen peroxide.
This technology provides the ice with an active protective barrier against accidental external contamination throughout its entire journey—from production and packaging to storage, transportation, and final use—helping preserve its hygienic quality and ensuring greater stability in terms of safety and suitability for consumption.
The challenge
Ice Cube set out to raise the quality standards of packaged ice, with the objective of delivering a crystal-clear product completely free from residual odors and flavors.
To achieve this goal, the project focused on four key challenges:
- implementing the OX-ICE® protocol, based on the controlled application of hydrogen peroxide, to ensure advanced protection against accidental contamination;
- protecting ice production systems from limescale buildup, improving operational efficiency and minimizing equipment downtime;
- reducing the overall water footprint by recovering and reusing process wastewater;
- removing excess salinity to achieve an exceptionally pure, high-quality final product.
The solution
Technoacque partnered with Ice Cube in the development of the patented OX-ICE process, designed specifically for the production of packaged food-grade ice with a precisely controlled concentration of hydrogen peroxide. The solution ensures full compliance with process requirements while optimizing both water and energy consumption.
The engineered solution is based on a five-stage sequential water treatment process:
- Cation-exchange resin softening: selective removal of calcium and magnesium to reduce total hardness and prevent scale formation;
- Activated carbon filtration: dechlorination and removal of organic micropollutants to protect the downstream reverse osmosis membranes;
- Reverse osmosis (RO): advanced desalination to achieve low conductivity levels and exceptional ice clarity;
- Precision OX-ICE dosing: controlled and stabilized injection of hydrogen peroxide to provide continuous antimicrobial protection;
- Water recovery system: partial recovery and reuse of treated process water, enabling more controlled and sustainable management of the overall water cycle.
Approximately 50% less water and energy saved.
Our commitment is to guarantee regular and economical operation of the plants as well as an optimal development of processes that require water,
at the lowest overall cost possible. All chemical treatments are optimized and monitored over
time by our specialised technicians located throughout the Italian territory.
